LOLLIPOP’S ROLLER DISCO ARMAGEDDON MIX

Before drum machines, before MIDI, and before samplers there were beautiful records created by talented musicians. 

 During the period of ’78-’79, the foundation for the soon to emerge Hi-NRG, Boogie & House genres were being laid. Lollipop’s Roller Disco Armageddon is a musical snapshot of this period - taken just barely before “cool” became cliché. This mix perfectly captures the glossy, last gasps of a genre soon decimated by commercialization.

Of course, no official roller disco soundtrack would be complete without soaring, symphonic strings, scratchy guitar, plucky bass and sexy, growling horns. The unique experience of the amplified disco sound in the roller rink is also accurately re-created with the assistance of a custom-programmed acoustic reverb mirror. This podcast mix faithfully highlights songs that packed the skating rink floor and raised the energy level through the roof. 

With an incredible playlist mostly exiled from pop-disco radio programs, many of these “one hit wonders” and the rare 12 inch versions had to be lovingly transferred from my personal vinyl collection to authentically recreate a magical Saturday night at the legendary Hub Axle Roller Rink.

I know you’ll enjoy this mix. For some of you, it’ll bring back heart-warming memories and for those who missed it, here is your contextually-correct opportunity to experience it for the first time. Lace 'em up tight – it’s an “All Skate Armageddon!”

LOLLIPOP'S 80's RETRO REVIVAL - MODERN MIX 1.0

Not all the music that is currently being released is great.  A majority of it with its aggressive, staccato synth stabs, uninspired 128 BPM tempo and lack of “song” comes off like so much repetitive clap-track on a fast road to nowhere. 

What’s a DJ with high standards to do?  The answer is “dig in the crates!!!”

I've been exploring my prized music collection for a few recent gigs and have cherry-picked a rare selection of tunes to craft a modern-yet-retro hommage to the incredible 80’s.  It is so much fun to see people react to rarely played classics and sing along with their favorites that have been sonically updated.  Add in some current songs that have an unmistakable 80’s alternative vibe to them and violà!  It has become a great set to spin live, and, a hell of a lot of fun to experience.

"This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next 15 years" - Brian Eno to David Bowie in 1977 after hearing "I Feel Love".

Indeed, Eno was quick to recognize the ingenuity and potential of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", with its clinical, pulsating bass line, hypnotically vocal, and entirely synthesized rhythm that dispensed with the lush orchestral sound which, until then, had been an integral part of the disco sound. History has proven that the slick, sequencer-driven recording produced by Giorgio Moroder & Pete Bellotte was a pioneering masterpiece of EDM that didn't just revolutionize disco, but change the blueprint for dance music forever.

That one song with its thick beats, soaring synths, hypnotic rhythms and dreamy vocals is still the blueprint for electronic dance music (some 35 years later!)
